A quick trick for checking boom angle when your indicator acts up
My old 80-tonner's angle sensor started giving me junk numbers on a site in Dayton last Tuesday. The load chart was useless without it. Instead of calling it a day, I used a cheap laser pointer from my truck, taped it to the boom, and shot it at a tape measure I stuck on the ground 100 feet out. Did the math from the manual's geometry table and got a solid angle reading in about two minutes. It got me through three more picks before the rain hit. Anyone else have a field fix for when the fancy gear quits?

Junk numbers on a site in Dayton last Tuesday" is the part that got me. You just casually kept working with a busted sensor on an 80-ton crane. That takes a kind of calm I definitely do not have.

The calm comes from knowing which junk numbers you can actually ignore (and which ones will kill you).

That's a solid MacGyver move right there. My version usually involves a lot more swearing and a phone call to the shop. Sometimes the simple fixes are the only ones that work when you're up against the clock.
