Hot take: the classic three act structure is holding writers back

I had a talk with a local author at a coffee shop in Portland last weekend. She said the three act structure is just recycled Aristotle from 300 BC. Why are we still forcing every story into that mold when people binge shows with 8 episode arcs now? Anyone else ditch the old frameworks and try something like a modular plot instead?

Wait, didn't I used to defend the three act structure like it was sacred gospel? Yeah, I totally did, but this chat with that author in Portland actually got me thinking. She said it's just a box someone made up a thousand years ago, and now I'm kinda wondering what else is out there for pacing a story.

Actually Aristotle wrote about tragedy around 330 BC, not 300, but your point still stands. I've been in the screenwriting trenches for about 15 years and I think the problem isn't the three act structure itself, it's treating it like a rigid recipe instead of a loose guideline. Some of my favorite scripts barely follow traditional act breaks but still work because they understand pacing and emotional beats on a gut level. That modular approach sounds interesting though I'd be curious how you handle rising tension without that familiar framework.
