My dad's 'that joke needs a harder punchline' comment back in '09 made me shorten all my setups

He told me to cut the first two sentences and just go straight to the pun, and now my one-liners actually get groans instead of blank stares at the family cookout, did anyone else get told their jokes were too wordy?

My old man said basically the same thing after I bombed at a talent show in 2010. Told me to stop rambling and get to the point. Now my stuff lands way better, just a quick setup and a hit.

Yeah, that "stop rambling" part hits close to home. I had the same problem back in 2013 when I was doing open mics. My buddy told me to cut out half of what I was saying and just get to the funny part. Made a huge difference once I started doing it.

Honestly, cutting the fat is the best thing you can do. I had a buddy time my jokes with a stopwatch until every word earned its spot. Ngl, it felt weird at first but now I can get a laugh with like five words max.
