Swapped my bass-heavy cans for flat studio monitors and my playlists got way sadder.

Used to think more bass meant better sound until I put on my old mixes with the new Sennheisers and heard a cello part I literally didn't know existed in a song I've listened to 200 times, so has anyone else had a pair of headphones completely ruin a favorite album for them?

Honestly, I think that's more about training your ears than the headphones actually revealing something. Your old mixes probably sound fine, you just got used to a certain frequency curve that made sad songs feel bigger.

I get what you're saying, but I think you're overcomplicating it a bit. You said it's "more about training your ears," and maybe, but good headphones do actually reveal stuff that cheaper ones hide. I've been through a few pairs over the years, and the difference between a $50 set and a $200 set isn't just something you get used to. Low end especially, bad cans just mush it all together, and you can't unhear that once you hear it clean. So I don't buy that our old mixes are fine, some of them probably sound pretty rough, and that's okay. It's not that serious, but it's also not just in your head either.
