Can we talk about how much oil a big rig engine holds? I just found out it's over 40 quarts from a spec sheet for a Detroit Diesel Series 60.
I was looking at a spec sheet for a Detroit Diesel Series 60 at the parts counter yesterday and saw it holds over 40 quarts of oil, which is more than the entire cooling system in my old pickup truck, so what's the most oil you've ever had to put in a single engine?
That's a lot of oil, but those engines are built to run for a million miles. The oil capacity has to match the job, cooling and cleaning a huge amount of moving parts. It seems crazy until you see the size of the oil filter alone.
But have you ever seen the oil pan on something like a ship's engine? A big rig is huge, sure, but it's still small compared to industrial stuff. I saw a video where they drained a locomotive engine and it took barrels, not quarts. That really puts the 40 quarts into a different light, like it's not even that crazy in the grand scheme of things.
