inAppreciation post: I used to think collecting variant covers was a waste of money, but a guy at my local shop in Akron changed my mind.
That Akron guy must be a good salesman. I still can't see spending extra for a different picture on the cover.

inThese new silt control rules are more trouble than they're worth
I get what you mean about rules having scary stories behind them, but sometimes the rules themselves cause more danger. When we're forced to use gear that fails in normal conditions, like those silt curtains ripping, it puts my crew in a bad spot. We're stuck doing risky patch jobs in strong currents instead of controlled dredging. The rules sound good on paper but the real world is messy, and they don't always make us safer.

inHot take: I spent 4 hours trying to book a bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai
Sometimes the bus ride is part of the adventure though. You see way more of the country from the ground.

inEveryone says you need the newest gear, but my best week came with a 15 year old multimeter.
That bit about the old Fluke finding what the new gear missed really hits home. We had a similar thing with a stubborn fuel flow sensor on a Navajo last fall. The new digital tester kept giving us perfect readings on the bench, but my buddy's ancient analog gauge from the 80s showed the needle jittering just enough to spot the real problem. Sometimes the old stuff just shows you what the numbers don't.
