Ditched the fancy grinder for a $20 mortar and pestle

Used to think I needed a $100 burr grinder for good coffee, but last month I crushed beans by hand with a mortar and pestle from a thrift store. Took 45 seconds but the flavor was way cleaner with no static mess. Anyone else tried hand crushing for a cheap upgrade?

Wife caught me doing it and just shook her head" - I think that's the official sign you've gone full coffee weirdo. My neighbor walked in on me crushing beans with a rolling pin on the cutting board and asked if I was making peace with my inner caveman.

Exactly what I needed to hear after burning out my $40 blade grinder last week. My forearms are getting a workout I definitely did not sign up for, but honestly that first cup of hand-crushed coffee made me feel like I discovered some secret. I tried it with some dark roast and ended up with way less fines in the filter, which was a nice surprise. My wife caught me doing it and just shook her head, but she took a sip and didn't complain, so I'm calling it a win.
