Showerthought: A pinch of salt in cheap drip coffee actually works
I always thought it was some weird barista myth until I tried it this morning with my $8 Folgers can. Just a tiny pinch cut the bitterness so much I didn't need extra creamer. Has anyone else found a simple trick that surprised them like this?
Salt in coffee is actually just covering up bad beans with chemistry. You're better off just buying better coffee or learning to brew properly instead of relying on a kitchen hack to mask the burnt taste. A pinch of salt might trick your tongue for a minute but it doesn't fix the underlying problem of stale or over-roasted grounds. If you really want to cut bitterness, try lowering your water temperature or using a coarser grind first. That pinch of salt is just a band-aid on a bad cup of coffee, not a solution.
