Wasn't sold on adding salt to coffee grounds until I tried it with my morning brew last week
I always figured salt in coffee was just another internet fad... but I was getting a bitter batch from my usual cheap Folgers and remembered someone mentioning it. Added a tiny pinch to the grounds before brewing and the bitterness just kinda disappeared? It didn't taste salty at all, just smoother. Has anyone else tried this and had it work with a specific brand?

Right, the science guy is onto something. It's the sodium ions that mess with your taste buds, basically blocking the bitter receptors from firing. Works like a charm with any cheap drip coffee I've tried, especially stuff that's been sitting on the shelf too long. My go-to is a pinch of kosher salt, dissolves quick and doesn't leave that metallic taste table salt can.

Heard some science types say salt blocks bitter receptors on your tongue, so it kind of makes sense it worked.

My morning go-to is Maxwell House and a pinch of Morton's canning salt. I tried it about two years ago after reading the same thing online. The bitterness just vanishes, like you said. It's not a huge change but it makes a difference, especially with those cheaper store brand cans. I use maybe a quarter teaspoon for a 12 cup pot and that's it. Just enough to smooth out the rough edges without tasting salty at all.
