Felt dumb at the lumberyard when the clerk asked me what wood type I was using for my pen holder

I was at Lowe's last week grabbing cedar for a desk planter box, but the clerk pointed out that softwood dings up fast near keyboards. Now i'm stuck debating if i should switch to walnut or just seal the cedar harder. Anyone else run into this choice between looks and durability on a small desk project?

The cedar grain thing is real though, every desk project I see with cedar ends up looking kinda... busy after a while. Are you leaning towards walnut for the color or just trying to avoid re-coating every six months?

Honestly, that clerk might've been onto something but not for the reason they think. The real hidden problem is you'll get tired of looking at cedar grain after three months and want to swap it anyway.
