Painted a laminate tabletop with cheap craft paint - it peeled off in 2 days
I tried to save $50 by using $3 acrylic craft paint on that old laminate desk I found at a garage sale in Austin. After two days the paint just flaked off when I set a coffee mug down. Has anyone found a trick to make paint stick to laminate without buying that expensive bonding primer?

Oh man, that sucks! My buddy Dan tried the exact same thing on a nightstand he was fixing up for his kid. He sanded it a little and used that cheap craft paint too because he thought primer was a ripoff. It started peeling the next day when his daughter put a water bottle on it. He finally learned his lesson and did two coats of a water-based bonding primer first, then a better acrylic paint, and it actually stuck. That bonding primer is the only thing that works on that glossy laminate, you can't skip it.

Oh man, I read something about that exact problem just last week! There was this article from a DIY blog I follow where a guy tried to paint those cheap IKEA Malm dressers without primer. He sanded them down, used a high-gloss enamel paint, and it still peeled off in big sheets like a bad sunburn. It turned out the laminate has a waxy coating that repels everything. The bonding primer was the only thing that saved his project after he stripped it and started over. It's crazy how much difference that one step makes, but it really is the secret sauce for that stuff.
