Tried a cheap AV cable for my PS1 and got a fuzzy mess
I picked up a $6 generic AV cable off Amazon for my old PlayStation 1 last week. Figured it would work fine since it's just basic yellow white red plugs. Hooked it up to my CRT and the picture had this constant static flickering that drove me nuts. Swapped back to my old official Sony cable and it was crystal clear again. Learned that those cheap cables don't have any shielding inside which lets interference mess up the video signal. Kinda mad I wasted the money but at least I know better now. Has anyone else run into this with off brand cables for their retro consoles?

Did you notice the cheap cable had those little ferrite cores or not? That static flicker is definitely from zero shielding inside those budget cables, I learned that lesson too with a cheap SNES cord.

Tell me about it @paulb98, I bought a dollar store HDMI cord once and my screen looked like a bad snowstorm on channel 3. Those ferrite beads are the only thing keeping that cable from acting like an antenna for every stray signal in the room. I would have saved time just plugging in a coat hanger.

Blame the missing 75 ohm impedance matching too, that's another big factor nobody talks about. Those cheap cables don't bother matching the signal path right, so you get reflections that bounce back and cause ghosting and noise. It's like shouting into a tunnel and hearing your echo mess up what you're trying to say. A proper cable has the right resistance built in so the signal flows smooth from one end to the other. Most people just think it's about shielding, but the impedance stuff matters just as much for a clean picture.
