Stopped teaching my kid multiplication tables the old way after a 5th grade teacher called me out
I used to drill my oldest with flash cards every night, thinking that was the only way to learn math. After his teacher sat me down at parent-teacher conferences back in October, she showed me how he was using a number line and breaking numbers apart instead. I was skeptical at first, but I let him try her method for a month. Now he actually understands why 6x7 equals 42 instead of just memorizing it. I feel like I wasted all that time on flash cards when the real learning was about concepts. Has anyone else found that replacing rote memorization with visual methods worked better for their kid?
