Our furnace refractory lining used to fail every eight months, but switching to a new high-alumina mix from a supplier in Toledo has it holding strong for over two years now.

Actually, it's the high-alumina bricks from Toledo. The mix is for patching. @jake_hall88, the base material matters most for that kind of life.

lol, yeah that Toledo supplier really seems to have something figured out. Eight months to two years is a massive jump, I've had to deal with patching jobs that barely held together for a single campaign before, so I feel that pain. Getting the base material wrong is a nightmare, you end up redoing the whole thing way sooner than you planned. Sucks when your production line is down because of a bad refractory decision.

Used to believe all refractory mixes were basically the same. Seeing a jump from eight months to two years with a specific high-alumina formula is a huge deal. That supplier in Toledo must have their process dialed in. Makes me reconsider where we source our own materials.
