Just found out most of the 'mahogany' furniture I've refinished over the years was actually sapele. Read it in an old woodworking magazine at the dentist.

Wait, is that really a problem though? Sapele is a fantastic wood, and it's in the same family. The color and grain can be so close that even experienced folks mix them up. Calling it mahogany was basically the industry standard for a long time, so you weren't working with some cheap knockoff. If the pieces turned out beautiful, that's what actually matters.

Exactly! Just check the end grain if you're ever unsure, sapele has that cool ribbon stripe look.
