I was reading reviews wrong for years and didn't know it

I always just looked at the star rating and maybe the top few comments. Then last month I was buying a new smartwatch and got burned. The watch had 4.5 stars, but after I bought it, the battery died in like 6 hours. I went back and sorted the reviews by 'most recent' instead of 'most helpful'. Turns out, a software update three months ago ruined the battery life for everyone, and all the recent one-star reviews were buried. I felt so dumb. I spent $250 on a thing that was basically broken because I didn't check what people were saying right now. Now I always sort by new and look for patterns in the last few months. Has anyone else had a gadget go bad after an update that the old reviews didn't warn about?

Sorting by new seems like a lot of work for every little thing... sometimes you just gotta buy the thing and hope it works out.

Last week I bought a blender without checking reviews and now it sounds like a dying lawnmower every morning.

That "hope it works out" feeling is the whole story of my life, margaret_singh1.
