Found an old flip phone from 2007 in a drawer, the battery swelled up like a balloon

Popped that bloated battery out with a plastic spudger before it turned into a fire hazard, but now I'm wondering what the safe way to dispose of these things is because the local e-waste center said they don't take lithium batteries anymore.

Yikes, that's a ticking time bomb. Most auto parts stores like AutoZone or O'Reilly take old lithium batteries for free, just tape the terminals. If they won't, find a dedicated battery recycler online.

Auto parts stores are good, but actually check with your town's hazardous waste drop off days, they usually take them.
