My dehumidifier died at 3am and now my basement smells like a wet dog

The fan just STOPPED spinning around 2 in the morning, no warning or weird noise first. I had to drag the 40-pound thing up the basement stairs by myself at 3am so I could try to fix it. Has anyone else had a major appliance just give up in the middle of the night for no reason?

Those compact dehumidifiers like the 50-pint models usually have a thermal fuse that can blow after years of use, and it's actually a pretty common issue. If you're handy with a screwdriver you might be able to pop the back panel off and check that fuse before tossing it. I mean, at 3am though I don't blame you for just wanting it out of the basement.

Oh great, so you're telling me I could have fixed my 3am frustration with a screwdriver and a $5 part? Thanks, @hayes.tara, now I have to dig it out of the trash and see if I can salvage this thing before my wife gives me the look for being a cheapo. Though honestly, at 3am I'm probably more likely to electrocute myself than fix anything, so maybe the trash was the right call.
