Rant: My ancient furnace finally gave up at 3 AM last Tuesday

I was up late watching old episodes of The Twilight Zone (the black and white ones, you know) when the pilot light just went out and wouldn't relight. Had to call an emergency HVAC guy who charged me a flat $350 just to show up. He said the heat exchanger was cracked and the whole unit is basically from 1985. Anyone else have a major appliance die on them in the middle of the night?

Funny you mention the Twilight Zone, because that's exactly what my old fridge started doing before it died - making weird humming noises that sounded like Rod Serling narrating my grocery bill. Last December, around 2 AM on a Saturday, I heard this thump-clunk and the freezer light flickered like a bad horror movie. Opened it up and everything was thawed, including a whole frozen turkey I'd been saving for Christmas. Then the compressor kicked the bucket and I had to empty the whole thing into coolers while yelling at my wife to find the emergency number. Spent the next two hours trying to fit a half-defrosted ham into a cooler with drive-thru ice bags from the 24-hour gas station. Worst part? The replacement fridge was supposed to be in stock but they delivered the wrong color, so I had a white fridge in a kitchen full of black appliances for three weeks.

Man that really stinks, I feel your pain. My freezer died at like 2 in the morning a few years back, woke up to a puddle on the kitchen floor and all my food ruined. It's always the middle of the night when stuff like this happens, never during normal business hours. Anytime I hear "emergency service call" I know I'm about to lose a chunk of my paycheck. Hope you get it sorted without too much more hassle.
