Discovered my grandma's trick for polishing brass with ketchup and it actually took off 15 years of tarnish on a lamp I got at a flea market.

She told me to let it sit for 10 minutes then rub with a soft cloth, and the difference was night and day, so has anyone else found a weird household item that works better than the real stuff?

My uncle swore by using cola to clean his car battery terminals. Honestly I think it just made everything sticky and sweet smelling but he insisted it worked better than that spray stuff. That ketchup trick is a classic though. I bet you could get a whole bottle of ketchup for cheaper than brass polish at the store. Just don't let your grandma catch you using her good cloth for it or you'll be in trouble.
