One comment about my strafe jumping wrecked my Quake habits

I used to play Quake 3 Arena in 2004 and thought I was hot stuff. A guy in a clan match told me my strafe jumping was too wide, that I was losing speed by overcorrecting. He showed me I needed tighter mouse movements and to tap the strafe key instead of holding it. After practicing for about 2 weeks, my time on the Campgrounds map dropped from 42 seconds to 34. Has anyone else had a random tip from a stranger that totally changed how you played an old game?

You ever get one of those tips that just makes you wonder how you ever played without it? I had a similar thing happen in Titanfall 2. Some random guy in a lobby told me I was bunny hopping too slow because I was jumping too late after landing. He said to hit the jump button right when I hit the ground, almost like a bounce. I thought he was crazy until I tried it in a private match. My whole movement speed went up, and I could chain wallruns into slides way smoother. Now I can't even watch old clips of myself without cringing at how clunky I was. Funny how one sentence from a stranger can totally reshape your muscle memory.
