My sister swore putting a kiddie pool on the porch would keep the cat off the furniture
She said cats hate wet paws and after 3 days of that pool sitting there my tabby still prefers the porch couch cushion, so I guess stubborn beats logic every time, has anyone else tried something that just backfired?

Stubborn beats logic" pretty much sums up my experience with cats too. I tried those sticky tape strips on the couch to keep my orange tabby off it, and she just sat on the armrest instead like it was a personal challenge. Ended up buying a cheap fleece blanket and draping it over the couch corner she claimed, now everyone's happy and the actual couch is fur free.

That blanket trick is genius because you're basically admitting defeat while pretending you won. The real secret with cats is that they think they're training you, and honestly, they are. What nobody talks about is how cats actually respond better to redirection than punishment. Punishing a cat just makes them sneakier. My neighbor spent months trying to keep her cat off the kitchen counters with aluminum foil and a spray bottle. Finally she just put a cat bed on top of the fridge. Now the cat sleeps up there and leaves the counters alone. Have you tried any other clever surrender tactics that worked out better than expected?
