The sink sponge situation I got totally backwards

I used to think you had to wring out the sponge bone dry after doing dishes. I kept having sponges get that sour smell after three days no matter what. My neighbor across the hall in our apartment complex saw me squeezing the life out of it one day and laughed. She told me to keep it damp but not soaking and stick it in the microwave for 2 minutes every morning. I tried it last week and the sponge has been fine for 8 days straight now with zero smell. Also she said those mesh sink mats are just bacteria hotels so I threw mine out too. Has anyone else been doing the microwave trick wrong this whole time?

The microwave trick is the only thing that saved my sponges too! I used to get so frustrated tossing them out every few days because of that nasty smell. My mom actually taught me to do the microwave thing years ago but I never believed it worked until I tried it myself. Now I do it every morning after I finish my coffee and my sponge stays fresh for way longer than a week. The mesh sink mat thing is interesting though, I never thought of those being gross but it makes total sense.
