Rolled a nat 1 on a persuasion check to convince a guard I was his long lost cousin... and my DM made him actually believe it

The last time I saw a nat 1 play out like that was in a Starfinder game where my mechanic tried to sweet talk a dock master. He rolled a 1 and the dock master just stared at him for ten seconds before calling security. I don't know, it sounds like your DM was being nice. Most GMs I've played with would have had the guard laugh in your face or arrest you for being weird. What was the DC on that check anyway?

Did the DM ever tell you what he had the DC set at? I always figure a nat 1 on a social check means you pretty much blew it no matter what unless you had some crazy buffs going on, like the guard just tuning you out or taking it the wrong way. Your dock master story sounds way more realistic for a botched roll, but I bet that starfinder character got blacklisted from the docks for a while.
