Just found out SSDI back pay isn't a lump sum for everyone
I was reading through the SSA blue book online last night, and I stumbled across a detail that threw me. Apparently if your claim takes over 12 months to process, they split the back pay into three payments, six months apart. I've been stressing about when I'd get all that money at once, but now it's like, wait I have to wait even longer? I get that they're trying to prevent fraud or whatever, but has anyone else been blindsided by this rule? How did you budget around it?
Yeah, it's like everything with the system, right? You think you've got it figured out and then boom, another rule nobody tells you about until you're in it. It reminds me of how every utility company and insurance place has these random policies that seem designed to trip you up, like how you can't cancel a cable package without jumping through hoops or how a medical bill gets coded wrong and suddenly it's a whole mess. Back pay spread over 18 months is crazy, especially when you were counting on that lump to maybe catch up on rent or pay off a credit card. I ended up just treating each payment as a separate little bonus and putting it straight into a savings account for the big stuff, it helped me not spend it on random things out of desperation.
Hate to disagree with you @elliotburns but the spread out payments saved me. Got hit with a giant lump sum once and spent half of it on dumb stuff before I even knew what happened. Felt like winning the lottery then realized I was just as broke three months later. Spreading it out forces you to actually budget instead of blowing it all at once.
