Blew out 3 pairs of cheap running shoes before I figured out I was tying them wrong
I picked up running about 8 months ago just to get out of the house, nothing serious. Kept getting these weird pains in my arches and my shoes started falling apart at the heel after like 60 miles each. I thought I just had bad feet or something. Then last month at a 5k in Portland, this older dude next to me at the start line looked down at my laces and goes "you're gonna blow a knee out with that heel lock missing." Had no clue what he was talking about. He showed me this simple knot thing where you use the extra eyelet at the top to lock your heel in place. Tried it on my next run and my foot stopped sliding around completely. Been 3 weeks now and the same shoes feel brand new still. Anybody else waste a bunch of money on gear before some random stranger told you the obvious fix?

Nah but my buddy blew out two pairs of hiking boots before his grandpa showed him the heel lock trick.

Ruby561 had a similar experience I see. What gets me is how many small things like this can completely change your experience with a hobby. I spent six months blaming my cheap shoes for blisters when it turned out I just needed different socks. The heel lock trick works for hiking boots too, which is funny because nobody ever thinks to check their laces before blaming the gear. Sometimes the simplest fix is the one we overlook the most.
