Vent: Bought a fancy board game organizer that wasted our whole night

I dropped $45 on a wooden insert for our copy of 'Settlers of Catan' thinking it would speed up setup. It took me over an hour to assemble the thing, and then we realized it didn't fit in the box with the 5-6 player expansion we always use. We spent the first 30 minutes of game night just trying to force it to work before giving up and dumping everything back into baggies. Has anyone found a good storage solution that actually works with all the expansions?

Hot take: I was putting up shelves wrong for years

I was hanging a simple bracket shelf in my garage and it kept pulling out of the stud, even with the right screws. My brother came over, watched me for two minutes, and said, 'You're drilling the pilot hole the same size as the screw.' I had no idea you were supposed to make it a little smaller. I redid it with a smaller bit and the thing is solid now. Anyone have other basic tips I've probably missed?

Just realized I was wrong about using a regular knife on that weird foam pad

I was doing a job in a condo over in Portland last week, the living room had this super thick, dense foam pad under the old carpet. I tried to cut it with my regular carpet knife and it just bunched up and tore. The homeowner actually had a serrated bread knife in the kitchen and let me try it, and it sliced through like butter. Has anyone else found a better tool for those super dense pads?

Hot take: the new repair shop in Springfield is doing things the wrong way

I stopped by that new place on Main Street last week, and they had all their workstations facing away from the customers. The owner told me it's to 'reduce distractions' while they work. I get the idea, but I've been doing this for 15 years and I think it's a mistake. It makes the whole process feel secretive and builds zero trust. In my shop, clients can see exactly what I'm doing with their $2,000 laptop. How do you all handle the client visibility balance in your own shops?

I finally bought a proper drafting lamp for my home setup

I was working on a set of mechanical drawings at home last night and the light from my old desk lamp was making me squint at the fine lines. I spent about $80 on a good quality drafting lamp with a flexible arm and a daylight bulb. It made a huge difference right away, the light is even and I can see every detail without shadows. Has anyone else found a specific piece of gear that made late-night drafting work a lot easier?

I finally tracked down the artist for a sketch cover after a two month hunt

Honestly, I know a lot of people say you can just message creators on social media, but that didn't work for me at all. I had a blank variant cover from a 2021 series I wanted signed and sketched on by the interior artist. I sent maybe ten emails and DMs over a month with zero replies. It actually took finding a podcast interview where the artist mentioned his rep's name, then tracking that guy down through an old forum post. From first trying to finally getting a reply and sending the book out, it was a full 8 weeks. Ngl, it felt like a part time job. Has anyone else had to do a deep dive like this just to get a signature?

Update: My fight with a cloudy polyurethane finish is over

So I've got this old desk I've been working on, and man, the polyurethane kept coming out cloudy. Tried everything, even asked my crew for tips, but they're plumbers, so not much help there. Then it hit me, I wasn't stirring the can properly. Gave it a good shake and mix, and the next coat was crystal clear. Really happy with how it turned out after all that fuss.
