One conversation with a 30 year vet made me question my whole approach to wire harnesses
He told me I was overthinking shielding and just needed to focus on proper grounding points instead. After trying his method on a Cessna 172 last Tuesday, my noise issues dropped by 80 percent. Anyone else run into old school advice that actually worked better than the manuals?

That Cessna 172 noise drop is a pretty solid result. Did the vet walk you through exactly where he puts his ground points, or was it more of a "just trust me on this" kind of thing? I'm curious if he had a specific spot on the airframe he swore by, like a particular bulkhead or engine mount, or if he just said keep the ground leads short and clean. Because I've had mixed luck with different grounding spots on different planes, even ones that are basically the same model.

markm27, that "keep the ground leads short and clean" line is the golden rule, but yeah, specific spots matter a ton. On the 172, the engine mount to firewall bond is where I've seen the biggest difference. If you hit a spot with original paint or corrosion, you're just asking for noise. Did you try a star washer between the mount and firewall at your tiedown point?
