Just realized the Wind River High Route was way more than I expected
I was really unsure about trying a high route instead of a normal trail, thinking it would just be extra work for the same views. Last August I spent 5 days on a section of the Wind River High Route in Wyoming, and it completely changed my mind. The off-trail travel over passes and around lakes gave a sense of adventure I've never felt on a marked path. The effort of route-finding and scrambling was totally worth the quiet and the views you just don't get otherwise. Has anyone else done a high route and found it changed how you plan trips?

My friend tried to convince me to do one by saying it's just hiking with extra steps. I mean, it's more like hiking with a final exam on rock scrambling and map reading. I came back sore but already planning the next one.

Honestly, isn't it wild how the hard way in anything, @brooke484, usually ends up being the most memorable?

The Wind River route sounds cool, but calling it a final exam is a bit much. It's just walking over rocks without a sign. People make these trips sound way more serious than they need to be.
