Watching the Perseids from a friend's farm outside Boise
I drove out there last August expecting a great show, but their yard light was a huge sodium vapor lamp that washed out half the sky. We ended up just lying on a blanket in the dark pasture behind the barn, and the view was incredible. Has anyone else had to get creative with finding a truly dark spot on someone else's property?

Classic. The one thing brighter than the meteors.

Actually, they still burn up from speed.

Actually the Geminid meteor shower peaks at around 120 meteors per hour. They're bits of an asteroid called 3200 Phaethon, not burning up from pure speed like most showers. That's why they're slower and often brighter. Makes you wonder what else we get wrong about space, right?
