Just lost a full Saturday and about $80 on a 'quick fix' clipper blade sharpener

I saw an ad for this handheld sharpening stone kit that promised to restore any blade in minutes. Figured it would save me a trip to the service center. Spent all morning trying to get a clean edge on my main clipper blades, following the video exactly. Ended up with a set of blades so uneven they pulled hair more than they cut. Had to rush out and buy a new set of blades to get through my afternoon appointments. Has anyone found a reliable way to sharpen at home, or is it just better to send them out every time?

Sending them out is such a waste of money and time though. You can totally learn to do it right with a decent guide and some patience. Those quick gadgets are junk, but a proper sharpening stone and a steady hand works. It's a skill like anything else, you just have to practice on old blades first. Giving up after one bad tool means you'll always be paying someone else.

Agree with julia622, it's a skill you can learn. Just takes some practice on cheap knives first.

My own attempt at that ended with blades so dull they could barely cut warm butter. I've got a drawer full of similar "time saving" gadgets that just cost me more money. These days I just bite the bullet and mail them to a sharpening service, it's cheaper than replacing blades. I guess some jobs are better left to people with the right tools.
