Thought my old drill was fine until I tried drilling into a load-bearing beam

Spent three hours fighting a 1/2" bit through a pine beam in my basement before I realized my cordless drill from 2012 just didn't have the torque. Borrowed my neighbor's hammer drill and it went through in like 30 seconds flat. Has anyone else hit a wall with older cordless tools on unexpected jobs?

Did you try those little impact driver bits instead of a regular twist drill?

Man, I had a 12v Ryobi that just gave up on me in the middle of building a deck...

Oh wow, that's rough. I used to think Ryobi was the budget king and that all their stuff was fine for weekend warriors, but I had a similar thing happen with their 18v drill a couple years back. It just stopped spinning mid-screw, no warning at all, and I was honestly shocked. I always figured you'd get more life out of them since they're so common, but that experience really changed my mind about relying on them for bigger projects. Your mileage may vary of course, but I ended up switching to something else after that.
