Pro tip: I switched from a standard 10-inch pouring shank to a 14-inch one last quarter.

Our scrap rate on the #2 line for gray iron castings dropped from about 8% to under 3% in three months. The longer shank lets me pour from further back, so I'm not leaning directly over the mold as much. It cuts down on the slag and dross getting pulled into the sprue from my movement. Has anyone else tried a longer shank and seen different results?

Wait, you were leaning directly over an open mold before? That sounds like a safety nightmare, forget the scrap rate. The heat and fumes alone must have been brutal.

Just realized they weren't wearing any face shields either. That's not just a bad process, it's asking for a trip to the emergency room. The heat off an open mold will fry your skin in seconds. Fumes are one thing, but you can actually get steam burns from the moisture in the air. Some shops have zero regard for basic safety.
