We switched from just playing games to having a themed potluck dinner first, and the whole vibe changed.

After 3 months of our usual pizza and Catan nights feeling a bit stale, my friend Sarah suggested we each bring a dish from the game's setting, like baking medieval meat pies for Lords of Waterdeep, and suddenly everyone was invested in the world before we even rolled dice.

My board game group did a similar thing for a game of Betrayal at House on the Hill. We all brought gross looking Halloween snacks and turned the lights down low. It made the spooky story so much better because we were already creeped out by the weird food. That extra layer of theme really gets people to buy into the game's world right away. It's way better than just ordering a pizza again. I read a blog post that called it "immersive snacking" and honestly that's the perfect name for it.

Wait, you all actually ate the gross looking Halloween snacks? I have to admit, I'm a little shocked by that part of @faithb78's story. The whole idea is brilliant for setting a mood, but I would have just poked at some jello worms and called it a day. The commitment to eat creepy food to get in the zone for Betrayal is next level. I guess that's the real secret, you have to fully dive in. My group would probably draw the line at eating something that looks like it came from the house itself.
