My uncle is a museum conservator and he pointed out that the technique is basically a controlled version of chemical patination. The expensive kit just gives you the exact pigments and binders that react in a predictable way, which is why cheap craft paint can't copy it. It's less about the colors and more about the science of the medium.

Man that's actually fascinating. @tessacarter, so you're saying the whole trick is in the chemical reaction not the paint itself? I've been wondering why my attempts at layering colors just turn into mud while the pro stuff pops. Is it like a specific binder that makes the pigment sit on top without mixing? Or does the bottom layer react with the top layer somehow? Because that would explain why people rave about the depth so much, if its literally a chemical reaction happening as each layer dries. Just seems like there's got to be a way to hack it without paying a fortune if the science is that straightforward.

My friend Sarah said the same thing, she thought it was just some overpriced art trend. Then she tried it on an old ceramic planter she had.
