Question about the old Smith's on Central near UNM

I stopped by that plaza yesterday for the first time in maybe a decade and it hit me how much quieter it feels now that the grocery anchor is gone, leaving just a couple shops in a space that used to be packed with families doing their weekly shopping.

I almost burned a batch using a cheap non-stick pan, but the cast iron gave it that perfect crispy crust my grandma always got. Anyone have a good skillet trick for keeping cornbread from sticking?

Had a customer bring in a truck that smelled like a fish market

Last month, a guy from the coast rolled in with his F-250 reeking of low tide. We found a whole mackerel, wrapped in newspaper, jammed up behind the fuel tank shield. He said his kid 'wanted to give the truck a snack' three days prior. Ever pulled something truly bizarre out of a chassis?

The day my local shop's new owner tried to 'fix' the back issue bins

So the old guy who ran The Panel Page in Oakridge for twenty years sold the place, and the new owner decided to 'streamline' the store by putting all the back issues in alphabetical order by character, not title. I walked in on a Tuesday to find a guy trying to find Amazing Spider-Man #300 in the 'P' section under 'Peter Parker'. He gave up and left. Has anyone else's shop tried something like this and had it blow up in their face?

Had a close call with a rotten limb in a backyard in Tacoma

I was doing a basic prune on a big maple last week, maybe 40 feet up. I set my line on what looked like a solid branch, but when I put weight on it, I heard this loud crack. The whole thing gave way, maybe 6 feet of it just snapped off. I had my second tie-in, thank god, but it swung me hard into the trunk. My shoulder is still sore. I should have probed it first, but I was in a hurry. Anyone have a good method for checking for rot when the bark still looks okay?

I bought a $70 automatic coop door and it's been a game changer for my early mornings

I got it last fall because I was tired of rushing out in the dark to let the girls out before work (I live in Seattle, so the sun comes up late). It opens at sunrise and closes at dusk on a timer, which has been perfect. I haven't had a single predator issue since, and my sleep is way better. Anyone else using one and have tips on winter battery life?
