Talking to a retired welder at the hardware store about old-school heat control

I was picking up some 7018 rods at the local supply place and got talking to this older guy, Frank, who used to weld on ship boilers. He said they'd use a piece of wet leather as a heat sink on thin-wall pipe when they couldn't get a good purge setup. He called it 'poor man's chill paste'. I tried it last week on a tricky 2-inch stainless job in a tight spot, and it actually kept the warping way down. Anyone else have a weird old trick like that they still use?

I finally tried the 'low power mode trick' for my old phone battery and it actually worked

My Pixel 4a would die by 3 PM every day. I read a review that said to just leave low power mode on all the time, not just when the battery is low. I thought that was dumb and would slow the phone down too much. Tried it for a week and my battery now lasts until bedtime. The performance hit is way smaller than I expected. Has anyone else kept a phone going longer with a simple setting like this?

Got called out for gatekeeping at my local shop in Portland

Honestly, I was at Bridge City Comics last week and this new guy asked me about a modern X-Men run. I basically told him he should start with Claremont's stuff from the 80s or it doesn't count. Another regular, Sarah, pulled me aside later and said, 'Look, you made him feel stupid for liking what he likes. That's how you kill a hobby.' Tbh, it hit me hard. I didn't even realize I was doing it. For the last month, I've stopped correcting people's reading orders or telling them the 'right' way to get into a character. If someone is excited about a new #1, I just talk about that with them instead of listing 50 back issues they 'need' to read first. It's actually way more fun. Has anyone else had to check themselves on this kind of thing?

Got a tough draft horse to stand still by changing where I put my tools

I was working on a big Percheron gelding out near Redmond last month, and this guy just would not stand square for me. Every time I tried to pick up a hind foot, he'd shift his weight or swing away. I was getting pretty frustrated after about 20 minutes of this dance. Then I remembered something an old timer told me years ago, about how the sound of your tools can set the mood. Instead of having my rasp and nippers in my apron on the side he could see, I moved my whole tool box to the ground directly behind him, on his other side. It was a quiet spot, and when I reached for a tool, the slight noise came from a place he wasn't focused on. He settled right down and let me finish the job. It seems like such a small thing, but the direction of the sound really mattered for this horse. Has anyone else found that moving your gear around can help with a fidgety animal?

Saw a crew in Toledo skip the pre-heat on a big steel pour last month

They were pouring a 500 pound casting for a machine base and just went for it cold. I could hear the metal screaming from across the bay. The whole thing cracked right down the center line after it cooled. It's not just about saving time, it's about the whole structure of the piece. Who else has seen a job get wrecked by rushing the setup?

A beta reader told me my fantasy world needed more normal jobs

I got a note from a beta reader last month that said, 'Your world has wizards and knights, but who makes the bread?' It hit me that I'd spent 200 pages on magic systems and zero on regular people. I changed my outline to add a scene where my main character talks to a baker about supply problems. It made the city feel real in a way the big battles didn't. Has anyone else gotten a simple note that flipped a whole story for them?

Showerthought: I used to think those flexible brush extensions were just a gimmick.

Had a real tight bend in a flue on a job in Springfield last month, and my normal rods were just binding up. Grabbed a cheap 12 foot extension with the wire core from my truck, and it snaked right through with no fight. Does anyone have a better brand they trust for these, or is it just luck of the draw?

A stray dog in the park showed me the best way to find the North Star

I was trying to spot Polaris near the swings in Miller Park, and a loose beagle kept staring at the same spot in the sky. I followed its gaze and realized I'd been looking at the wrong 'pointer' star in the Big Dipper the whole time. Anyone have a better trick for lining up those two front stars?

Built a raised platform to keep my molding sand from getting soggy

For a while, my backyard sand pile would turn into a mess after rain, making castings come out rough. Over the weekend, I put together a simple wooden frame using leftover planks from a shed repair. I added a slanted plywood top and wrapped it in a cheap plastic sheet to shed water. It was a bit tricky to get the angles right so water would run off, but I managed with a hand saw and some screws. Now the sand stays dry and ready to use, which saved me time on my last project. I even added hooks on the side to hang my riddles and trowels. This small change has made my after-work tinkering a lot smoother. It's nothing fancy, but it feels great to solve a nagging problem.
