Shoutout to the shop that showed me how to properly prep aluminum panels

I kept seeing guys at my old place in Tacoma just scuffing aluminum with a red pad and calling it good, which led to a ton of adhesion failures down the road. A mentor finally sat me down and made me use a dedicated aluminum prep solvent and a fresh gray pad for every single panel, explaining how the oxide layer forms so fast. Has anyone else had to break a bad shop habit about metal prep?

Working a salvage job in the Gulf last month, we had a big argument about using lift bags versus a crane for a heavy piece.

We were pulling up a big steel beam from about 90 feet down. The foreman wanted to rig it with two 500-pound lift bags and bring it up slow. He said it gave us more control and was cheaper than calling a crane barge. But our lead diver, a guy named Carl, said that was asking for trouble. He had a story from three years ago off the coast of Louisiana where a bag got snagged on a piling, shot to the surface, and almost hit a supply boat. He wanted to wait for the crane, even if it cost the client extra and put us a day behind. I saw points on both sides. The bags can work fine if you're careful, but that 'if' is a big one down there. What's the smarter play in your book, control and cost with bags, or the safety and speed of a crane for heavy lifts?

That time a spoon saved me from replacing a whole dishwasher motor

I went to fix a dishwasher that was making a bad noise. The customer thought the motor was broken and would cost a lot to replace. When I checked, I saw a spoon stuck in the pump. I took it out, and the dishwasher worked perfectly again.

Rant: Skipping pre-heat on a thick pipe weld cost me a full day

I was fixing a high-pressure steam line and thought I could weld without pre-heating the joint. The pipe was thick and cold from sitting overnight. After I finished, the weld cracked right down the middle once it cooled. I had to cut it out and redo everything, losing a whole day of work.
